Solemn deliciousness

I had an inappropriately good time recently at the United Nations commemoration of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. It's their own fault, I figure, for hiring awesome dancers from the Cameroonian National Ballet and putting out a phenomenal spread of "Diaspora foods".

In between conch fritters, fried plantains and Haitian black rice, we even got to listen to a lecture on African and Caribbean foodways from NYU food scholar Scott Barton. Meow.

This is what it looked like:

Pickled hot peppers (Senegal)

Antigua & Barbuda!

Cameroonian dancer ... care of UN Photo

Plantains (Colombia)

Suriname!

Fruit cake (Suriname)

Cameroon!
